Strawberry Ghosts (Halloween Chocolate Covered Strawberries)

These strawberry ghosts are a fun and delicious Halloween treat. These are basically white chocolate covered strawberries that look like little spooky ghosts! They are super quick to make especially if you engage your little helpers!

Ingredients

There are only 4 ingredients needed to make this delicious little treat:

White chocolate

You can use white chocolate bars, white chocolate melting wafers, or white chocolate melts. I especially recommend baking chocolate – it’s already tempered which means it will look prettier for a longer period of time.

Coconut oil

It is used to make the chocolate more shiny. You can use neutral-tasting vegetable oil instead. You can also omit it.

Strawberries – Choose medium-sized fresh strawberries.

Dark chocolate – For the ghosts’ eyes and mouths.

Alternatives:

  • you can also use mini chocolate chips
  • or go lazy like I did and use a chocolate icing decorating pen
  • another option would be to use candy eyes
  • or make a homemade, very thick chocolate icing by combining cocoa powder with small amount of water.

If you would like to add even more flavor to this dessert you could also add a small amount of vanilla extract or almond extract to the chocolate.

Labeled ingredients for strawberry ghosts.

Step by step instructions

Strawberries are being cleaned with paper towel. Coconut oil is being added to white chocolate in a bowl.

STEP 1: Wash the strawberries and pat them dry with paper towels (it’s important, otherwise the chocolate won’t stick to the strawberries).

STEP 2: Melt the chocolate: add the chopped chocolate and coconut oil into a heat-proof bowl (metal or ceramic).

(Note: you can also melt the chocolate in a microwave in 30-second increments until chocolate is melted and smooth.)

A pot with boiling water. Chopped white chocolate in a blue bowl on top of a pot with boiling water.

STEP 3: Pour boiling water into a medium pot.

STEP 4: Put the bowl on top of the pot. The bowl shouldn’t touch the surface of the water.

Melted white chocolate in a bowl. A strawberry is being dipped into melted white chocolate.

STEP 5: Cook over the lowest heat, stirring the chocolate all the time, until it is melted. Take the bowl off the pot.

STEP 6: Dip the strawberries in chocolate.

White chocolate covered strawberries on a parchment paper. Chocolate icing is being piped onto strawberries.

STEP 7: Place them on a tray lined with parchment paper. Let the excess chocolate drip off and form a tail. Spoon some extra chocolate with a teaspoon to create a ghost’s tail.

Put the tray with strawberries in the fridge until the chocolate is set.

STEP 8: Melt the bittersweet chocolate using the same method or use a chocolate decorating pen to make two eyes and a mouth with the icing/melted chocolate (if using chocolate you can use a toothpick to do that).

Chill until the chocolate is set.

Enjoy!

Storage

These chocolate covered strawberries, unfortunately, can not be made ahead – they will look good on the outside but the strawberries will release juices and become mushy. I would store them for a maximum of a couple of hours in the fridge in a tightly closed container.

They can not be frozen.
